BIM to CIM: from Building Performance to Territorial Management

Blog BIM to CIM: from Building Performance to Territorial Management

The Executive Master’s program “BIM to CIM” offered by the School of Architecture, Planning and Design (SAP+D) in collaboration with the Executive Education S&T at UM6P, operates in a context marked by digital transformation and the increasing demand for digital professions. It presents itself innovatively and aims to train a new generation of professionals capable of meeting Morocco’s new digitalization needs in the building and urban development sectors.

In this context, it’s worth noting the various possibilities offered by BIM approaches for working within an optimized framework. Mastering these tools helps facilitate the clear and holistic visualization of project data to analyze different scenarios and optimize the execution of complex and sustainable projects. Through BIM, it is possible to study energy efficiency requirements, reduce construction errors, save time and costs, and efficiently optimize materials and their environmental impact.

It’s also important to note a transition from the scale of individual buildings to the urban scale because the goal is to optimize the performance not of a single building but of the entire city. City Information Modeling (CIM), through BIM, enables holistic performance of urban areas while generating an effective monitoring and management system through collected data for better planning. CIM also explores other digital and spatial tools such as Digital Twins, GIS, and AR/VR (Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality) to achieve virtual simulations that allow analysis of the city’s current status and its multi-scale performance. Utilizing the CIM approach in urban management helps address territorial challenges, evaluate the environmental impact of construction operations, and foster better collaboration among city stakeholders for sustainable, efficient, and resilient urban management.

This perspective at the intersection of BIM, CIM, and the pursuit of performance is realized through modules dedicated to integrating BIM in the context of Construction 4.0 and sustainable architecture through practical workshops using various tools. These workshops allow an in-depth exploration of applying BIM to construction and infrastructure projects. Additionally, within this Executive program, various resources are provided to master the transition from BIM to CIM in the context of urban and territorial planning through initiation into modeling and simulation of digital urban models.

By addressing these topics comprehensively and rigorously, candidates will be able, upon completing this program, to: create digital models for buildings, infrastructure, and urban development, coordinate a BIM project with a variety of stakeholders, master sustainable construction with the BIM approach, manage BIM projects from legal and regulatory perspectives, and evaluate the environmental impacts of territorial performance in construction projects. These skills will culminate in the completion of a professional thesis at the end of the program, allowing candidates to put into practice the knowledge acquired throughout the training.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the Executive Master’s program “BIM to CIM: from Building Performance to Territorial Management” offers extensive networking opportunities and employs innovative and interactive teaching methods by involving national and international experts.
